Description
This training will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by families and parents of LGBTQ+ youth and navigating the unique intersecting challenges faced within their workplace. Navigating legal frameworks, accessing healthcare services, and fostering acceptance within familial and societal contexts will be discussed. Through real-world examples and discussions, participants will learn how to build inclusive policies and compassionate workplaces.This session provides strategies for supporting parents & families of LGBTQ+ youthÂ
Objectives
- Comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by families and parents of LGBTQ+ youth.
- Review challenges or issues families may be facing including legal frameworks, accessing healthcare services, navigating school policies, and fostering acceptance.
- Explore strategies for creating inclusive policies, fostering open communication, and offering meaningful support to colleagues who may be navigating these challenges.
Components
- Understanding LGBTQ+ and Transgender Terminology:Â Define key terms (e.g., LGBTQ, transgender, non-binary, gender fluidity, etc.) and explore the spectrum of gender identity and sexual orientation.
- Challenges Families of LGBTQ+ and Transgender Kids Face
- Parental Support for LGBTQ and Transgender Children: Role of parents/family in advocating for and supporting their child’s identity and emotional challenges faced by parents and family members
- Creating Inclusive Workplace Policies: Discuss family leave and healthcare policies that can support all parents and extended family members.
- Supporting LGBTQ and Transgender Families in the Workplace: Addressing stigma, bias, and workplace challenges specific to LGBTQ+ parents/family members.
